Abstract

It is critically important for David Guramishvili to tell the truth. Clearly, this is not a poetic invention either, that before the war the country was hit by natural disasters, This was followed by the outbreak of a strange, brutal disease that killed both humans and livestock. Most likely, it was the Black Death epidemic. As is seen from the Bible, the plague was viewed an expression of God’s wrath. The outbreak of an “alien, merciless disease” in Georgia was regarded by David Guramishvili in the same context. In the words of the poet: “David’s statement was completely fulfilled” that is a reference to the verses in the Psalm that emphasize God’s punishment as a consequence for people’s disobedience, unbelief.
